Born in Paris in 1961, Denis Darzacq started his career like many French photographers in press photography. With a sharp eye for contemporary society, he approaches the human body through his photographic investigations, since he believes that the body cannot be isolated from the societal problems and context in which it interacts.

Exhibiting his artwork since 1994, his photographs are nowadays represented in various public and private collections, in France as well as abroad, recently earning him the Prix Niépce in 2012.

Photographed in several French cities between 1997 and 2000, the Ensembles series is the inaugural work of Denis Darzacq’s investigation into the place of the individual in contemporary society. Working primarily with overhead views, Darzacq fragments the crowd milling about under his gaze. Opposing the historical concept of the decisive moment, Darzacq’s random compositions frame unassuming indiscriminate occurrences and the tiny gestures of daily life. They reveal individuality which is lost behind the social stereotypes.
