Born in 1978 in Eritrea, Aida Silvestri lives and works in London (United Kingdom).

Aida Silvestri is a contemporary photographer, known for her committed and humanistic work. She uses photography as a means to explore and denounce social issues and injustices. Silvestri is particularly recognized for her series addressing topics such as migration, identity, and diaspora.

One of her most notable works is the series “Even This Will Pass,” which tells the personal stories of African migrants who have undertaken perilous journeys to reach Europe. Through her poignant portraits and intimate narratives, Silvestri humanizes experiences often reduced to statistics, offering an empathetic and nuanced perspective.

Her photographs are distinguished by a narrative and documentary approach, combining classical portrait techniques with textual elements to enrich the context of each image. Silvestri’s work has been widely exhibited and acclaimed in galleries and photography festivals in the UK and internationally.

Aida Silvestri continues to live and work in London, where she pursues her exploration of themes related to human resilience and the struggle for dignity, while using her art to raise awareness and inspire social change.

She graduated in photography from Kensington & Chelsa College and Westminster University.

Her work focuses on a personal and altruistic investigation of the fate of African refugees, presented in the form of blurred portraits with the traces of their routes embroidered directly onto the photographs. Poems on the themes of collective and individual identity and displacement accompany this political and human work.

It is a pleasure to welcome this artist in the frame of the European Month of Photography (EMOP) 2017.
