What is EMOP (European Month of Photography)?

The European Month of Photography was created in 2004 organised by the European House of Photography (Maison Européenne de la Photographie - MEP) in Paris and its director Jean-Luc Monterosso. Supporting this initiative at the beginning were the Museum Education Service Berlin (Museumspädagogischer Dienst Berlin) and the Vienna Executive City Councillor for Cultural Affairs. These three cities were joined in 2005 by the association Attive Zone for the City of Rome, Fotofo Society of Bratislava, House of Photography of Moscow and Café-Crème of Luxembourg. Since early 2012, the network of European Month of Photography welcomed two additional members: Ljubljana and Budapest. Since 2004 in these capitals, museums, galleries and institutions dedicated to photography have organised a series of exhibitions over a pre-set period (one month or more) based on a theme of their own.

Following the exhibition series Mutations I, II, III between 2006 and 2011, The European Month of Photography introduces the exhibition project “distURBANces” which presents artistic positions that offer new perspectives on urban, technological and political developments.

The European Month of Photography: ARENDT AWARD

Furthermore, as from this year, the European Month of Photography network offers a new photography award: The “EUROPEAN MONTH OF PHOTOGRAPHY ARENDT AWARD”. This award will be granted every second year to one visual artist who is part of the common exhibitions the network is curating throughout Europe. The award, presented for the first time in Luxembourg, is granted to one of the 26 artists of the exhibition project “distURBANces” by the jury consisting of four “distURBANces” curators: Gunda Achleitner (Vienna), Paul di Felice (Luxembourg), Katia Reich (Berlin) and Jean-Luc Soret (Paris), and Oliva María Rubio, exhibition director of Spanish “La Fabrica”.

And the rewarded artist is...

This year, the jury awarded Dionisio González for his work reflecting the pertinence of the artist’s achievements in relation to the theme, high photographic quality, as well as a coherent artistic approach.

The winner of the "EUROPEAN MONTH OF PHOTOGRAPHY ARENDT AWARD" will be exhibited in the exhibition space of Arendt & Medernach's headquarters in Luxembourg from 25 April 2013 onwards.
