Brexit, the future relationship between the EU and the UK – AGEFI
Following the referendum of 23 June in the United Kingdom on membership of the European Union, the UK will need to negotiate its exit of the EU with the remaining Member States and the UK and EU will also aim to agree on their trade relationship once ‘Brexit’ has occurred.
As has been widely reported in the press, the UK will not leave the EU overnight. Under Article 50 of the EU Treaty, the UK must first notify the European Council, composed of all the Member States, of its intention to leave. A period of up to two years will then follow to negotiate the withdrawal, which can be extended with the express agreement of all Member States.
